New Album Funding: La Inestable de Brooklyn (feat. Emilio Solla)
When I got an invite from my friend to this Emilio Solla's recording session, I had expected another tango band. What I arrived to was this fusion of jazz, tango, and Argentine folkloric music that consistently gave me goosebumps. Years ago I got to experience my friends' instrumental rock band in a recording session, but witnessing this nine piece jazz ensemble was a whole other beast. Even though I was there for work, I had to take a few moments to just soak in the music in the recording booth. It was an absolute treat to get to experience this.
Although they're currently in the recording process, they're still in need of funding to help see this project into completion.
Here is the IndieGoGo fundraising page.

The Bad Plus - Seven Minute Mind
I particularly like listening to music before I go out to dance tango. Sometimes it can help me make a connection to music before I make an even deeper connection later on. Just like I would never listen to Caspian right before a Caspian concert, I never listen to tango music before a Milonga.
Yesterday started as a Denovali Records day until one of my favourite jazz ensembles came up, Contemporary Noise Sextet, then it became a jazz day. My good friend from Hungary, noticing I've been listening to jazz for most of the day, suggested me this Minnesotan Jazz trio. I instantly fell in love with the song he introduced me to, Forces. The more I listened to their music the more I was falling in love with their sounds... until Seven Minute Mind came on. When the song started really 'groovy' I thought, "Oh, that's cool, I really like this!" And then it transitioned to this absolutely gorgeous piano, beautiful in a classical (genre) kind of way. This song instantly started resonating with me. Chills were going down my spine, goosebumps formed, my eyes were quickly watering. I went from bobbing my head to nearly weeping. Once the song finished I knew I'd be listening to this a lot in the next couple months. I had just found my most recent favourite song.
Needless to say, it was a good night of tango.

123 - KDA
I come across a lot of phenomenal artists through my music discoveries. And sadly, a lot of these artists get forgotten after a period of time. But the other side of the fun of music discovery is rediscovery. I rediscovered 123 just recently and reminded myself what initially captured me. Their music resonates with such beauty that it penetrates my entire being. When I hear this song, even though I didn't listen to their music during my two week stay in Turkey, I'm instantly flooded with memories of walking through the outskirts of Samsun during the setting sun. I feel a warm sensation and a build-up of emotion when her voice is accompanied by harmonics.
One of my major regrets from my two month trip through Europe and Turkey last year was not getting to see 123 play. But that will be one of my biggest goals of my return trip.

Dosh - Loud
I've been out of it for the past several days. So what better way to be "in it" than to just to go head-first into some new music. This first started with something a little more familiar. I started listening to a little The Non some The Octopus Project, and from there I discovered this artist. This entire album (Tommy) is filled with an array of styles that all blend beautifully together. A little folk, a little hip-hop, jazz, alternative... it's nice. I'm totally digging this.

Toumani Diabaté Symmetric Orchestra - Tapha Niang
It is now 2012. I'm curious what this year will have in store. I think it's a good sign when you delve into a completely different style of music at the very start, heh heh. I have been on an African music kick since the last days of 2011.
I fell in love with this song when I first heard it on Little Big Planet. For a while I didn't check into who played it until just recently. Once I listened to the entire album I had to have more from this area of the world. There will definitely be more African music on my blog from now on!
Normally I don't feature a song that is this popular, and I was about to play Mali Sadio, but after listening to Tapha Niang I had to... I freakin' love this song.

Hidden Orchestra - Strange
While listening to Jaga Jazzist last.fm radio I came across this. It is somewhat of a rarity to come across something where I, very audibly, go "WOW" and frantically start searching for a way to purchase. There have been enough impulse buys like this that I can count on one hand. This one, however, has to be one of my favourite impulse buy.
If I had to describe these guys I would have to say they're like The American Dollar, Tomáš Dvořák, and Contemporary Noise Quintet put together.

Mathias Eick - Oslo
This Esbjörn Svensson Trio artist radio on last.fm is producing some delicious jazz. I had to feature at least one of the newly discovered artists.

the Corny - It Was
Toward the end of my Europe trip I was enroute from Vienna to Budapest by train. My good friend greeted me at the train station and had expressed earlier that she had a surprise for me. Of course, I was really anxious and excited about this surprise. As she walked me through Pest all the buildings started to look familiar yet I had no clue where we were. We end up stopping at a secured gate. Words which I could not understand were exchanged between her and the security guard before the gate unlocked for us to pass through. The surprise ended up being a new band's, the Corny's, rehearsal at the Keleti Blokk. And a surprise it was. (The only other band that I got to experience this kind of performance with was Magna in Los Angeles.) It was a delight seeing The Corny play and an amazing last day to my trip.
Since that night I have been anticipating their first album release. The album is still currently in the works, but they've released one song a teaser. Listening to this song the first time earlier today I was brought back to Keleti Blokk, reliving the moments in my head.

Pink Freud - Jazz Fajny Jest
I was hoping to do some updates while on my trip to Chicago but it seems like I wasn't even able to do that. I wish I could have said that it was because the trip was SO AWESOME that I had no time, but it wasn't. Don't get me wrong, Chicago was great, Labirinto was phenomenal, and my time spent in St. Louis was a blast, but the road has been unforgiving and wrought with stress and frustration.
But I come back with some delicious jazz; good for the soul. Mmmmm.

Jaga Jazzist - Swedenborgske Rom
Lately I have been swamped with work, hence my less frequent updates. I haven't had the time to search for a new artist to feature every day. However, I stumbled upon this listening to my friend's last.fm radio. Lately I don't find myself instantly falling in love with bands quite as frequently. But this... wow... I have never heard jazz so epic. I have heard jazz fusion with rock, but jazz fused with progressive (post-) rock? I instantly bought What We Must shortly after the song finished. I had to.

The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation - The Admirals Game
Two friends, one from Colorado and one from Hungary, that know nothing of each other posted The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble on facebook within a couple hours from each other. So, I thought I'd add in some of TKDE's alter ego, TMFDC... then decided to make an entry here. This blog needs more drone jazz.

Charles Spearin - Anna
This is a part of Spearin's (of Do Make Say Think, Broken Social Scene, and KC Accidental) experimental project, The Happiness Project. In a lot of post-rock often times a band will play spoken tracks and the band will play a background tune. In this project, however, he recorded his neighbour's conversations and turned their spoken tracks into music.
